Bulgaria will soon join the Schengen zone

Good news for residents of Bulgaria: the country has concluded a deal with Austria that opens the way to joining the Schengen zone. From March 2024, travel between these countries by air and sea will be free of border controls.

When to expect Schengen for Bulgaria

The opening of land borders in Europe for Bulgaria is scheduled for a later date in 2024. In early December 2023, the possibility of creating a "Schengen Air Agreement" was discussed, which would involve simplifying air traffic rules on the condition that Brussels strengthens its control over the EU's external borders.

Bulgaria, being a member of the EU since 2007, has fulfilled all the necessary requirements and reached the necessary level of readiness to join the Schengen area, which already unites 23 out of 27 EU countries. Reliable protection of the external borders of the Schengen zone will avoid problems with illegal migration.

Benefits of the Schengen Area for Bulgaria

Accession to the Schengen area will be a landmark event for Bulgaria, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism and strengthening people-to-people ties. Logistics will be simplified, economic ties between European countries will be strengthened - this will open new investment opportunities.
Stay tuned: the exact date of the opening of the land borders will be announced at a later date.
